Reports FAQ
What is Search Reports Tool?
On the Nevada Children’s DataCenter, “Search Reports” allows you to search the website by age, location, and topic area. What you choose in each area becomes part of the search. If you choose 0-2 and Disability under “People” and Clark under “Location,” the results will show you data about 0-2 year olds in Clark County and which includes disability information.
Do I have to choose something in each section?
No, you do not. If you leave a section blank, the website will automatically assume you have no preference about that section. If you only want to find information about a certain age group (eg. 0-5) regardless of location, just enter 0 and 5 under “Age” and click the “Search” button. If you only want information about Lander County and Early Childhood, choose “Lander” under “Location” and “Early Childhood” under “Topic” and click the “Search” button.
What are keywords?
Typing in a keyword will search within all data on the site for the word or words you type. For example, if you want to find information about TANF, type “TANF” into the keywords and click the “Search” button. This will find “TANF” wherever it appears on the website.
What do the AND and OR buttons mean?
Choosing AND will narrow your search. Choosing OR will expand your search. For example, if AND is selected and you choose Clark, Washoe, and Douglas, your results will be data that have ALL of those locations. If you select OR and choose Clark, Washoe, and Douglas, your results will be data that have ANY of those locations.
For more information on AND/OR searching, see http://www.lib.lsu.edu/ref/flash/Boolean.swf
I didn’t get any results when I searched. Why not?
When this happens, it means that no data on the site includes ALL of the items you checked in your search. For example, if you chose People: 3-5, race; Location: Nye; Topic: Health – Physical and received no results, that means no data exists on the website for 3-5 year olds in Nye County about race and physical health information.
Databases FAQ
Which databases can you search?
This option allows the user to search the American Community Survey (ACS), the Kindergarten Health Survey (KHS) or both in the All option. A description of the programs can be seen below.
American Community Survey (ACS) – Is a survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau annually. It collects a variety of information including age, sex, race, family, education, economics, and much more. This data is used to estimate population statistics and plan for the future. For more information visit their website at http://www.census.gov/acs/www/about_the_survey/american_community_survey/
Kindergarten Health Survey (KHS) – Is an annual survey administered by the Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy (NICRP), in partnership with the state’s 17 school districts, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), and the Nevada State Health Division. The survey is distributed to parents of children entering kindergarten at the start of the school year throughout all school districts in Nevada. It examines the health status and health insurance status and helps identify any potential future problems. For more information visit http://nic.unlv.edu/index.html.
Do I have to choose something in each section?
Yes. In order for the search to work the user must make a selection from each of the options in the search criteria including the demographics, location and year. Additionally, the user can check the requested data/variables that they would like displayed in the output.
I didn’t get any results when I searched. Why not?
When this happens, it means that no data from the databases includes ALL of the items you checked requested in your search or the search did not complete from some reason. If this occurs please check your search options and perform the search again.
How do I export the results from my search?
The data can be exported by clicking on the “export report” button on the search page or the results page. Clicking on this button will open a pop up box. The user can select which program to use to open the CVS file. Microsoft Excel is the default program but if you would like to use another program please choose it from the list. Once you have selected the program click OK and the file should be automatically opened. Be sure to save the exported report before you close the program.
